School Overview:
Welcome to the Dutch Broadway Elementary School! Dutch is one of six elementary schools in the Elmont School District. It has a student population of approximately 950 students in kindergarten through sixth grade.
Talented teachers and a supportive staff create a positive learning environment and provide students with the education they need to prepare for the 21st century. Our superb instructional program is aligned to New York State Standards and Assessments. We are proud of our achievements and the progress we are making.
Besides the class work in the grade level classrooms, all students also have classes in Art, General Music, Library, Physical Education and Computers at least once a week. Academic support is provided in Reading, Math, Speech and a strong program for English Language Learners is also included in a student's school day. Academic support is provided throughout the year in ELA and Math (Grades K-6) Social Studies and Science support (Grades 4 and 5) in morning, after school and holiday tutorial programs.
In addition to quality academic programs, Dutch Broadway Students participate in the following during and after school contests and activities:
• National Challenge Contests in ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science (grades 2- 6)
• National Red Ribbon Week
• Math Olympiad (Grade 6)
• Model United Nations (grades 5-6)
• New York State Music Association (NYSSMA) approximately 35 students each year
• New York State PTA Reflections Contest
• New York State PTA Parents as Reading Partners Program
• Assemblyman Alfano’s “Summer Reading Challenge”
• Assemblyman Thomas Alfano’s “Mentors and Leaders Program”

The Dutch Broadway School maintains a high reputation among elementary schools in Nassau County and New York State. Over many years, numerous awards have been earned. Listed below are but a few of them:
• Recognized by the New York State Education Department as a High Performing /Gap Closing School (2004 & 2005). Our Music Program is held in the highest esteem, with numerous All County Performers.
• Received National School Change Certificate of Recognition from Fordham University (2005)
• Sixty seven students in Grades 4 - 6 were eligible and recommended for testing for the Johns Hopkins Center for Gifted and Talented Youth Testing (2006)
• Over 300 students participated in Assemblyman Thomas Alfano’s Reading Challenge; the largest student participation rate in the 21st Assembly District.
• State recognition of TWO primary grade Art students in the ‘National PTA Reflections Contest” (2005 and 2006)
• Our school is regularly featured on Cablevision, Channel 18.
• Mr. Walter Aksionoff, recognized as Educator of the Week (2004).
• Our school has been featured in the New York Times (Jan./2006).
In these hectic times, Dutch Broadway School realizes the importance of parental involvement in our school. Dutch Broadway parents dedicate their time and talent to the Elmont Community and serve as excellent role models to our children. Dutch parents serve as leaders in the civic, cultural and athletic programs throughout the district. Our PTA sponsors family events and programs. Throughout the year they arrange cultural arts programs, chaperone field trips, plan parties and assist teachers as needed. They are also represented on the Site Based Management Team.
The teachers, staff and parents are committed to working together for the success and well being of every one of its students. We believe all children are special and all can be successful learners and citizens.
