During the month of October, teachers and service providers will assess students in reading. They will conduct a running record to identify your child’s instructional and independent reading levels according to the F&P Text Levels. Please note, students cannot pass or fail this assessment. The result will not affect your child’s grades. The results of the assessments will enable teachers to plan meaningful and effective instruction, tailored to every type of learner within their classroom.
The running record will be conducted using the Raz-Kids app on the students’ school iPad. Once students are assigned the running record on the Raz-Kids app, students record themselves reading the text, record themselves retelling the story, and then take a Comprehension Quick Check Quiz. This three-step process takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Click here to view a demonstration video of the assessment process or go to (https://www.raz-kids.com/shared/video.html?id=286). For students taking this assessment remotely, please allocate them a quiet location free of distractions, as well as encourage them to complete the assessment independently.
Once your child completes the assessments, your child’s teachers will share their independent reading level with you. The independent level identifies your child’s “just right” reading level or a level where your child can read comfortably with fluency and understanding. We encourage your child to read books at his/her independent level to help strengthen skills and to promote a love for reading.
If you have any questions regarding the reading assessment, please reach out to your building administration or your child’s teachers.
