Dear Elmont Community,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am excited to launch the Inclusive Community Read Program. Research shows that students benefit when they see themselves in their learning materials. In turn, the Inclusive Community Read Program for this school year focuses on diversity using children’s literature. The goal of the program is to build more inclusive classrooms by using these books as effective tools to affirm diverse student identities and to help facilitate important conversations about equity and belonging. Ultimately, this program provides an inclusive, representative, and equitable language arts curriculum for our scholars.
Parents/guardians play a critical role in the success of our Inclusive Community Read Program. For this reason, we are sharing with you a curated list of the books we are using (please see back of this letter). Monthly, your child’s teacher will select a book from the list and conduct lessons that encourage child-friendly discussions and provide assignments. We encourage you to ask your children questions on the books they are reading in class and allow them to make personal connections with the text. Remember, starting to talk about equity at a young age is critical to creating awareness and lasting change, and books are one of the most effective and practical tools for initiating these conversations. We also encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher on how to further support your children at home.
