Dancing With the Scholars at Alden Terrace

The universal language of dance was on full display when Alden Terrace School held its first-ever “Dancing With the Scholars” ballroom showcase on March 21.

The entire fourth grade, including those in the Applied Behavior Analysis program, were featured in the beautiful performance as a culminating activity to their participation in Dancing Classrooms of Long Island’s 10-week residential program. Students took part in 20 dance lessons as part of the program, learning the foxtrot, merengue, polka, rhumba, swing, tango and waltz. They also learned the origins of the dances and completed written assignments connected to what they learned.

During the showcase, students demonstrated the newly learned dances and the proper way to hold their frames, as well as how to escort and thank their partners. Several students also shared personal reflections on the experience.

Principal Shawnée Warfield brought the Dancing Classrooms of Long Island program to the school this year because she wanted the school’s scholars to experience all of the benefits that come with learning ballroom dancing, including self-confidence, respect for others, social awareness, increased physical and emotional well-being, cooperative teamwork with the opposite gender and an appreciation for cultural diversity. “Dancing brings people together from different cultures, different backgrounds and different beliefs, and if our world could just be a microcosm of what we have here today, boy, would it be a much better place. But it starts here, with our youth,” Mrs. Warfield told those in attendance.

In addition to the students’ families who were invited to attend, Superintendent of Schools Mr. Al Harper, Director of Curriculum Ken Rosner and other district administrators and building-level leaders turned out to support the children.
