Elmont honors students, parents and educators
It was a night of celebration in Elmont as Board of Education members and administrators recognized the outstanding achievements of many during its May Board meeting at Clara H. Carlson School.
The evening kicked off with members of the District’s Wind Ensemble performing several selections under the direction of teacher Lisa Bratisax. It continued with Dutch Broadway School fifth grade student Katelynn Kreepali being honored by SCOPE Education Services Executive Director George L. Duffy III. Katelynn created a video that highlighted the wonderful activities that take place during SCOPE’s child care program at her school. Mr. Duffy presented Katelynn with an iPad. He also presented the school’s child care program director Debbie Ciampa with another iPad for student use, as well as Starbucks gift certificates for Dutch Broadway School teachers.
Clara H. Carlson sixth grade teacher Elissa Racioepo received a $500 check for classroom supplies for the 2019-2020 school year from Doherty Enterprises, the franchise that owns the 21 Applebee’s locations on Long Island. Ms. Racioepo was recognized as a winner in the second annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest, which honors top teachers as nominated by their students. Ms. Racioepo was nominated by her student Erin Simon. Erin’s essay was selected as one of four winners out of 200 entries. In addition to the monetary gift, Erin’s class will receive an end of the year party at Applebee’s.
Also honored at the meeting were members of the district’s new ENL Academy for Parents and Guardians. The eight-week program, which began last fall, helped acclimate participants to communicating using the English language, how to access the parent portal and district website, and more. According to Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services Ms. Helisse Palmore, the program was created to foster and nourish the essential collaboration between the district, the students and their families.
The celebration portion of the evening concluded with Superintendent of Schools Al Harper recognizing Clara H. Carlson Assistant Principals Richard Mansfield and Amanda Sagnelli with tenure. The building leaders were applauded by their colleagues and family members on this milestone achievement. Congratulations to all!
