Elmont hosts 14th annual LEEMUN Conference

Excitement was in the air when Elmont School District fifth and sixth graders and their families gathered at Elmont Public Library for the 14th annual Lee Marcus Model United Nations program on May 23. Students, who researched and represented various countries, presented their position papers based on this year’s topic, “Gender Equality through Literacy and Education.”

While on stage, they also answered questions from their peer-delegates on the floor. Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Helisse Palmore highlighted the significance of this year’s subject, as it is a pertinent issue in society. “By our students being engaged in programs such as the Lee Marcus Model United Nations program, it allows them to become advocates for those who are silenced, those who are underrepresented and those who are often forgotten,” Ms. Palmore said.

“We also want this program to continue to be a reminder to all of our students that they are indeed our future trailblazers and influencers, who have the ability to push through any and all obstacles and barriers set before them. Here in Elmont, we continuously challenge our students to keep rising up until their ceiling becomes their floor.”
