Hispanic/Latinx Heritage celebration at Alden Terrace

On Nov. 27, Alden Terrace School hosted its second annual Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Assembly. Students in second to sixth grade learned about different countries in South America with the help of special guest Justo González Gómez, a grandfather of two Alden Terrace students.

Merengue and Salsa music filtered through the air when the students entered the gymnasium for the assembly, led by Assistant Principal Dr. Wellinthon García. Dr. García shared information on national dances, music and history from South America; more specifically, the Creole and European influences on the indigenous cultures. The assembly was interactive, with students, teachers and parents learning Spanish phrases and being quizzed on their new knowledge of the different South American flags; national dances, like vals criollo (Peruvian waltz); and national music like “Vidala,” a traditional song of Argentina. The students learned about Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

González Gómez sang and played instruments, including the chuli zampoña (a panflute), the rondador (a set of chorded panpipes) and the charango (a stringed instrument that resembles a ukulele). He was accompanied on stage by students representing the different countries.

“The goal of the assembly was to celebrate diversity in the school, as well as tie in with the November book of the month, ‘Dreamers’ by Yuyi Morales,” said Principal Shawnée Warfield. “The book of the month provided the background to share everyone’s unique immigrant story to America.”
