Project-Based Learning at Dutch Broadway

Students at Dutch Broadway School have been engrossed in hands-on learning and research. Aligned with one of the district’s initiatives, teachers have been implementing project-based learning in science classes. Each fifth grade class learned about a different ecosystem and explored ways they can apply their knowledge to the real world.

As the culminating activity for their project-based learning unit on ecosystems, fifth graders Amanda Johnson and Odelia Nugent from Mrs. O’Brien and Mrs. Koch’s class presented their research on epiphytes to kindergartners in Mrs. Fortunato’s class.

The fifth graders constructed a Southeast Asian rainforest habitat with plants, animals, insects and other products found within the habitat. The kindergartners were able to explore the model rainforest.
