Alden Terrace Fifth Graders Attend Virtual Field Trip

Alden Terrace School fifth graders in Mrs. Cartwright and Ms. Anesta’s class recently traveled to the past with a virtual field trip to the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook.

The museum’s large exhibit of stagecoaches directly connected to the novel the students were studying in class, “Riding Freedom” by Pam Muñoz Ryan. The story, which takes place in the mid-1800s at the start of the Gold Rush, discusses important issues such as freedom and women’s rights, especially the right to vote.

During the virtual field trip, the students were treated to a meaningful presentation from museum educator Todd Weston, who tied in multiple connections to the books. They viewed carriages from the same time period as the book and also received a lesson on horse care. Mr. Weston brought the past to life virtually for the fifth graders.
