To foster a greater appreciation and enjoyment of reading, Gotham Avenue School hosted a Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) Week, from March 22-26.
Each day featured a different activity or event, either in school or virtual, for the students to participate in. The week kicked off with a virtual teacher read aloud on Monday night through Zoom.
In-person activities included Poem in Your Pocket Day on Tuesday and Book Character Day on Friday. For Tuesday’s theme, all students were invited to find a poem that they liked and carry it around throughout the school day. They were encouraged to take out their poems and read them to classmates, teachers or any member of the school community. And, to close out PARP Week, students were able to dress up as their favorite book characters.
Virtual Academy and in-person students were all challenged to a Reading Marathon on Wednesday. All students were also able to participate in Thursday night’s virtual Poetry Slam. Students from grades K-6 recorded videos of themselves reciting poems they had written, and it was shared with everyone who tuned in.
