School Overview:
The Clara H. Carlson School is the second largest elementary setting in the Elmont Union Free School District. Housing approximately 38 classes, the Carlson School offers a variety of curricular and extra-curricular activities designed to help students meet and surpass New York State Learning Standards. Programs such as morning and afternoon tutorial sessions, Writer’s Workshop, Reader’s Workshop, Computer Club, Dance Club, Literary Magazine Club, Peer Mediators Club, Garden Club, Library Club, Safety Patrol, JazzMaster’s Workshop, and Student Government are just a few of the enrichment and/or intervention programs implemented at the school on a daily basis.
Recent standardized test results have indicated that more than 80 percent of Carlson’s fourth graders have met and/or exceeded state standards. Through the efforts of dedicated administrators, staff, an active Site Based Management Team and PTA, the school community vows to work together to insure that each and every student’s needs are addressed. This concerted effort is guided by our mission statement:
“It is the specific mission of our school to provide a safe educational environment in which all teachers can teach, and all students can learn. Once established, the environment will then be further developed through the implementation of a standards based curriculum; with the expectation that all students will realize their maximum potential."
