Elmont Union Free School District

The Elmont Union Free School District proudly celebrated the 21st anniversary of the Lee Marcus Model United Nations Program, known as LEEMUN, at the Elmont Public Library on June 12. During the past several months, fifth and sixth grade student delegates districtwide have immersed themselves in the roles of United Nations diplomats, studying and debating two timely global issues. Among the topics explored was literacy and gender equality, which highlighted the persistent challenges surrounding access to education worldwide. Students developed informed positions and engaged in diplomatic dialogue as they examined these complex issues. This enriching experience was made possible through the leadership of districtwide adviser Mr. Mike Sakowich, dedicated building-level advisers, and members of the Sewanhaka Central High School District Model UN team. The evening was a powerful celebration of student voice, global awareness and the enduring legacy of the LEEMUN program.
