Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and School Board Recognition

Gotham Avenue School’s gymnasium was buzzing with excitement as families and community members gathered at the board meeting on Oct. 14 to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and School Board Recognition Week.
The evening began with a warm welcome from Principal William Mingo, followed by students sharing how they connected to Hispanic and Latino cultures through music, storytelling and creative projects.
Adding to the celebration, a talented group of students took to the stage to perform three lively and culturally rich songs: “It’s a Small World,” “Un Poco Loco,” and “Colombia, Mi Encanto.” Their performance brought the crowd to its feet, earning a standing ovation as the students smiled proudly and took their final bow.
To thank the board for their hard work and dedicated service, Gotham Avenue and Clara H. Carlson School scholars presented the board members with gifts of appreciation. In September, the district celebrated National Dot Day by reading “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. In honor of the board “making their mark” by supporting the schools, teachers and students, Carlson presented the board with their own copy of the book. Gotham’s students gifted the board with decorated record LPs to further signify that “music connects us all.”
“It is indeed a time that we take to say and express our sincere gratitude to the dedicated members of our school board,” Superintendent of Schools Marlon Small said. “They have given of their time, they have given of their energy; they have sacrificed many countless hours to serve our students and our school community.”
Mr. Small thanked the board for their dedication and unwavering support, noting that many new initiatives this year were made possible under their leadership.
