Alden Terrace School Hosts Schoolwide Hispanic Heritage Celebration

In an inspiring display of culture, unity and learning, Alden Terrace School hosted its first schoolwide Hispanic Heritage Month assembly on Oct. 21, bringing the school community together to honor the rich traditions of Hispanic and Latin American communities.
To help organize the event, a Hispanic Heritage Committee was formed, consisting of building administrators, ENL staff, the school counselor and teachers. Each grade level participated by researching a different country, highlighting its unique culture, traditions and cuisine, and showcasing their creativity through lively performances and imaginative video presentations. Grade-level teams selected countries that resonated with their students’ interests. The countries represented in the assembly included Spain, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Peru, Colombia, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Cuba.
This schoolwide celebration not only educated students about various Hispanic cultures but also highlighted and honored the diversity within the Elmont community, as many scholars presented in Spanish with English translation provided by a peer. Additionally, Acting Principal Sonia Rodrigo and Interim Director of ENL Rita Johnson shared that they are from Guatemala and Costa Rica, respectively.
