Fourth Graders Create ‘Starry Night’ Inspired Artworks at Clara H. Carlson School

After viewing and discussing Vincent van Gogh’s famous “Starry Night” painting, scholars in grades 3-5 are applying those same principles to their own artwork. Using oil pastels, texture plates and paint, the young artists are exploring linework and creating movement through paint techniques.
“My students continue to amaze me with their observations and their imaginations and in doing that, they help me to be a better me,” Ms. Romano said. “This is their studio, and they absolutely love to paint.”
In addition to fostering creativity and hands-on exploration with art materials, the art sessions support positive behavior and social-emotional learning. Each class begins with an energizing dance activity that transitions into a mindfulness moment, where students practice breathing techniques and calming strategies. To further encourage growth and positive engagement, an “Artist of the Day” is recognized during each session, honoring a student who has demonstrated notable progress, effort or exemplary behavior.
