Covert Avenue School Students Test Knowledge in Annual History Bee

Covert Avenue School students in grades 3-5 recently put their historical expertise on display during the school’s annual History Bee. After emerging as champions in their individual classroom competitions, 14 finalists advanced to the schoolwide bee, where they faced off in front of an enthusiastic audience of classmates.
Contestants tackled questions spanning centuries of world history. They were asked to identify the volcano that devastated Pompeii on Aug. 24, 79 AD, and to name the iconic interlocking bricks invented in 1934 by Danish toymaker Ole Kirk Christiansen. The opening round featured multiple-choice questions, while the second round raised the stakes as the scholars had to provide correct answers without prompts to remain in the competition.
The event was organized and judged by library media specialist Jessica Murphy, who was assisted by ENL teacher Tara Das. After a close competition, third grader Sabian Suhku claimed the championship title, with fifth grader Elise Verestegui earning second place. Sabian received a trophy, prize bag and a MakerSpace Day, and his class was awarded five Who HQ books for their classroom library.
“Congratulations to all of our competitors for their hard work and outstanding effort!” Principal Alison Gunn said.
