NY Islanders Patch Design Contest and Saturday Enrichment Academy Highlighted at Board of Education

Elmont Union Free School District highlighted enriching learning opportunities and celebrated the artistic talents of its scholars during the Board of Education meeting on March 10.
The meeting began with a presentation from Saturday Enrichment Academy Principals Stacia Walfall and Pamela Boyd, who shared highlights from this year’s program. Each year, the Saturday Enrichment Academy offers students meaningful learning experiences beyond the traditional school day. During the course of four weeks, scholars explored courses aligned with their interests, including science exploration, robotics, dance, coding, engineering and visual arts. In addition, each class received a push-in lesson in social-emotional learning, music or technology to further enrich and diversify their learning experiences. This year, 374 scholars in grades K-6 from across the district participated in the program.
Following the presentation, more than 20 scholars were recognized for their recognition in the New York Islanders Patch Design Contest. Students were challenged to design an original Islanders patch that reflected how they celebrate their own culture. The contest aims to highlight the traditions and values that make each student unique while celebrating the diversity that strengthens the school community.
“We received many, many creative and meaningful designs, and it was inspiring to see how students represented their own cultures through art, color and symbolism,” Director of Curriculum and Instruction Pamela Stamidis said. “Thank you to every student who participated and shared a piece of their heritage with us.”
Finalists from each of the district’s six schools were honored. The final patch design winners are Savannah Percival from Alden Terrace School and Efrain Herrera-Roman Jr. from Gotham Avenue School. The students who had their designs made into stickers are Abbey Bierd from Clara H. Carlson School, Mehak Asif from Covert Avenue School, Sajdah Khan from Dutch Broadway School and Drew Foley from Stewart Manor School. All six students were invited to attend the Islanders game on March 13, where their achievements were recognized.
