Gotham Avenue School Presents Fourth Annual Black History Month Living Wax Museum

Gotham Avenue School’s gymnasium was recently transformed into an interactive museum as second grade scholars presented their fourth annual Living Wax Museum in honor of Black History Month.
Each classroom was assigned a different theme, including arts and entertainment, civil rights and government leadership, and sports. As part of the project, students researched a notable Black figure connected to their classroom theme, learning about the individual’s early life, accomplishments, influence and interesting facts. The activity served as the culminating project for their English unit on biographies, as well as their studies during Black History Month.
For the event, students dressed as the person they researched and stood as “living wax figures,” ready to share what they had learned with classmates, staff and family members. Visitors also learned about influential figures such as Arthur Ashe, Shirley Chisholm, Gabby Douglas, Duke Ellington, Whitney Houston and Garrett Morgan.
Now in its fourth year, the Black History Month Living Wax Museum helps young scholars build research and public speaking skills while bringing history to life.
