Clara H. Carlson School Introduces New Peer Mediation Program

Recess at Clara H. Carlson School is more than fun activities, it’s also a time when students support one another and build a caring community. The school proudly launched its new Peer Mediation program in April, introducing a group of dedicated fifth and sixth grade scholars who volunteer during recess to support their younger peers in grades K-3.
Twenty students were carefully nominated by their classroom teachers in recognition of their strong academic performance, helpful nature, and demonstrated leadership and communication skills. Selected mediators participated in a three-day training led by school counselor Jane Dragovich and the school social worker Karina Bruno, where they developed skills in active listening and learned effective language strategies to support conflict resolution.
During both indoor and outdoor recess, peer mediators engage with younger students by facilitating play, encouraging turn-taking and fairness, promoting peaceful problem-solving, and assisting with end-of-recess routines. Through these interactions, they build meaningful connections that help identify and resolve conflicts in a positive and supportive way.
To encourage continued excellence, the program will recognize a “Mediator of the Month.” Looking ahead, the program aims to introduce a student-friendly incident report system to further support communication and reflection around conflict resolution.
“It’s been really exciting to see our peer mediation program get off to such a strong start,” Ms. Dragovich said. “Our fifth and sixth grade mediators have stepped into their roles with a lot of responsibility and care, and they’re already making a positive impact during recess. They’re helping younger students talk through problems, listen to one another and find respectful solutions. Our mission is to empower students to take on leadership roles, promote kindness and empathy, and help build a school community where everyone feels safe, supported and heard.”
The program will continue through the end of the school year, with plans to resume in September and build on its early success in the new academic year.
