National Poetry Month Activities at Covert Avenue School

Throughout April, Covert Avenue School scholars celebrated National Poetry Month with a variety of engaging classroom activities, library contests and reading initiatives.
As part of their poetry studies, students explored creative expression by writing Earth Day haiku and spring-themed acrostic poems. Kindergarten classes brought the celebration to a close with Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 30, proudly wearing poems they had written at home with the support of a family member. They also collaborated with their sixth grade buddy classes to create personalized acrostic poems based on their names.
Each month, the school’s library media specialist Jessica Murphy hosts a writing contest for students in grades 1-6. In honor of National Poetry Month, participants were challenged to write a clerihew, a whimsical four-line poem with an AABB rhyme scheme. Four students were selected as winners and received certificates of recognition along with fun prizes, including a Bentcil, a coupon for a cookie or ice cream sundae, a toy, a bookmark and a book.
Additionally, the school library hosted a scratch-and-sniff bookmark challenge for students in grades 3-6 to encourage poetry reading. Students who checked out poetry collections or novels in verse earned a special bookmark, making reading both interactive and rewarding throughout the month.
