The Elmont community gathered at the board of education meeting on Oct. 13 for a special celebration

The Elmont community gathered at the board of education meeting on Oct. 13 for a special celebration honoring both Hispanic Heritage Month and School Board Recognition Week.
The evening began with welcoming remarks from Superintendent of Schools Marlon C. Small.
“This week, we take the time to recognize and thank members of our Board of Education for your leadership, for your commitment to public education and for your commitment to our students,” Mr. Small said. “On behalf of our students, our staff, our administrators and the wider Elmont community, I thank you for your sacrifice, I thank you for your leadership, I thank you for your dedication to public service, and I thank you for the important work you do each and every day. The work we do in our schools each day would not be possible without your constant support, without your dedication, without the leadership you’ve provided.”
Following his remarks, Stewart Manor School showcased a video featuring scholars reflecting on their Hispanic heritage and sharing the traditions, values and customs that make their cultures unique. The heartfelt presentation highlighted the rich diversity of the school community and the pride students take in their backgrounds.
The Stewart Manor School chorus also took the stage to perform the beloved traditional folk song “La Bamba,” celebrating the vibrant musical heritage of Hispanic cultures for families, community members and board trustees in attendance.
In recognition of School Board Recognition Week, students from Stewart Manor School and Covert Avenue School presented board members with personalized journals featuring student-designed artwork on the covers. Each journal also included handwritten letters of appreciation and a special page recognizing the students whose creativity contributed to the keepsakes, serving as a meaningful token of gratitude for the board's dedication and service to the Elmont school community.
